Theatergoers who check out Bebe Neuwirth’s return to the Kander and Ebb musical “Chicago,” where she is playing the prison matron “Mama” Morton through March 9, will hear her sing the character’s signature number, “When You’re Good to Mama.” To celebrate her “Chicago” trifecta — Ms. Neuwirth has also played the principal roles of Velma and Roxie — she chose to sing “Nowadays,” a song she describes as “archetypical Kander and Ebb.”
“It’s dark and light at the same time,” she said. “It’s darkly beautiful.”
But Ms. Neuwirth certainly knows her way around the number. She originated the role of Velma in the 1996 Broadway revival of the show, and returned in 2007 to play Roxie. For this video she and her pianist, Scott Cady, take a cabaret approach to the song. Ms. Neuwirth said if “Chicago” had a theme song, “Nowadays” would be a contender, along with “All That Jazz”and “Razzle Dazzle.”
“But this one really can work as a standard song,” she said, adding with a laugh: “And I know it.”
I really love Bebe Neuwirth a lot.
